Firstly, hello and welcome to my blog!
I've decided to start this blog to document my journey into freelance work, and give myself a space to brain dump all my arty ventures. So hopefully, you enjoy!
In my first week staring my freelance journey I have created this website, applied for a few grants (very profesh) and I've started making work for a utility cabinet commission (that I'm hoping to win).
The aim of the application is to find work that encompasses the spirit of Newcastle's queer scene, so what is most important to Newcastle's queer scene, and indeed the rest of Newcastle? THE PEOPLE!
I wanted to create a sort of character collage, thinking about the diversity of the people of Newcastle and trying to demonstrate the multifaceted aspects of queer people, including dual marginalised identities (e.g. being a queer person of colour, or disabled and queer).
I started out by drawing out a utility cabinet and drawing a rough sketch onto it in pencil, but I soon realised that I wasn't filling all of the cabinet, so I decided to try and lay out the design in a few ways on the page, and then practice some colour ways.
I had some pens on loan from a friend, but didn't have the bright colour set that I wanted for the piece, so I decided to move onto my iPad and add a digital colour way. I even laid the design over a utility cabinet.
The commissioners only asked for roughs, so there's still plenty of work to be done here. I haven't done as much drawing as I maybe would have liked, but my main focus for this week was putting a website together, applying for some grants and workshop spaces, so I'm looking forward to next week where I can do more hands on artwork.
A short one for the first week with lots of background things happening, but more to come next week. I hope you enjoy coming on this journey with me!
Tatty bye xoxo
